Warwickshire farmer’s son and Harper Adams University College (HAUC) graduate Harry Barnes is the 2012 winner of the Rumenco Beef and Sheep Award for his exemplary business appraisal of a Shropshire farming estate.

Harry, from Abbey Hall Farm, Brinklow near Rugby, graduated last summer with a first class BSc Honours in Agriculture. He won the award for the best BSc IV assignment submitted on a ‘Beef and Sheep Enterprise Appraisal of Holdgate Hall’ for the Sustainable Animal Production Systems module of his degree.

Harry has now returned to the family business to farm in partnership with his mother and father, and is aiming to put his college learning straight into practice. “We run an 800 acre mixed arable, beef and sheep farm, but are looking to develop the beef enterprise significantly. I now plan to add a suckler herd to run alongside the 15-18 month Continental stores we already buy in to finish,” Harry said.

HAUC senior lecturer Simon Marsh said that Harry was a thoroughly deserving winner of the award. “Harry’s always had the intention of returning home to improve the efficiency of the family business. He has the skills to do that and we wish him and his family every success as they embark on this new development,” he said.
